MY CAT BROUGHT HOME A BABY FOX ON CHRISTMAS EVE—AND REFUSED TO LEAVE HIS SIDE

On Christmas Eve, my cat, Maple, came home carrying a baby fox as gently as if it were one of her own kittens.

When I opened the door, Maple was standing on the porch with a tiny fox cub in her mouth. She carefully set him down on the welcome mat, then stayed close, refusing to leave his side.

The cub looked so small and helpless that I wrapped him in a warm towel and called a wildlife rescue. They told me he was too young to survive on his own and would need warmth until they could take him the next day.

So he spent the night with us.

By Christmas morning, Maple still hadn’t wandered away. She stayed curled up beside the little fox near the Christmas tree, calm and watchful, as though caring for him was the most natural thing in the world.

Later that day, the fox cub was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center, where he could receive the care he needed.

For just one night, though, Maple reminded me that kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it simply means staying close to someone who needs you.
