MY FAITHFUL FRIEND AND I MAY BE GROWING OLDER, BUT WE NEVER LET EACH OTHER FEEL ALONE.

I’m 100 years old, and I adopted a 14-year-old dog whose family asked the shelter to put him down simply because they said he was “too old.”

My name is Margaret, and most people think someone my age shouldn’t adopt a pet. But when I heard about Benson, a 14-year-old senior dog who had been surrendered to a Texas shelter, I knew I wanted to meet him.

His family had asked the shelter staff to euthanize him for no reason other than his age. The shelter refused, believing he still had good life left to live.

The first time I met Benson, he rested his head against my chest as though we already knew each other. A senior dog and a senior woman—we understood one another right away.

Now he spends his days napping beside me, wearing little sweaters to keep warm, and following me from room to room. I never have to wonder where he is because he’s almost always close by.

People often tell me I rescued Benson, but I see it differently.

Benson rescued me from loneliness.

Together, we’re giving each other a gentle, peaceful final chapter—one filled with quiet companionship, comfort, and love.
