They turned five marriage proposals, three children, and one long daily commute into a love that has stood the test of time.
Their story began in 1975, when Joe Biden’s brother introduced him to Jill Jacobs, a University of Delaware senior who was just beginning to rebuild her life after a divorce.
Joe was 32 years old, serving as a U.S. senator and raising his two young sons on his own. Every evening, he rode the train from Washington back to Wilmington so he could be home to tuck Beau and Hunter into bed. Those nightly trips became more than a commute—they reflected his determination to be the father his boys needed while balancing the demands of public service.
As Joe and Jill spent more time together, their relationship grew naturally between college classes, family dinners, and campaign events. When Joe worked late, Jill often cooked for Beau and Hunter, creating a bond with the boys long before she agreed to marry their father. She understood that loving Joe also meant becoming an important part of their lives.
